The development of wearable computing systems has long been constrained by fundamental limitations of classical geometric optics. Traditional lenses require significant thickness to correct chromatic aberrations, making augmented and virtual reality glasses bulky and uncomfortable for everyday wear. The breakthrough by South Korean researchers from POSTECH lies in transitioning to metalenses—flat optical elements that manipulate light phase at the nanoscale. The key achievement is not only radical miniaturization but also effective resolution of color reproduction problems, which previously required complex multi-layer constructions that increased device weight.
