Commercialization of Scientific Potential: Robotics in the Energy Sector as a Driver for Import Substitution

A deal between St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and the Industry Competence Center for Robotics, providing for the delivery of 20 industrial robots to energy sector enterprises, demonstrates the effectiveness of Russia's domestic technology transfer model. In the context of 2026, this event transcends a simple commercial transaction, becoming an indicator of the maturity of the "science-production" value chain. A key aspect is the retention of intellectual property rights by the university, which guarantees technological sovereignty and eliminates risks of blockages or termination of support from foreign vendors, characteristic of previous years.
The economic dimension of the deal also deserves attention. The robot cost range of 5 to 6 million rubles makes automation accessible to mid-tier enterprises of the fuel and energy complex. This enables the deployment of intelligent systems in hazardous and hard-to-reach zones, reducing dependence on the human factor and improving overall production safety. For the industry, this means the possibility of scaling autonomous solutions without reliance on expensive foreign service contracts.
The implementation of such solutions stimulates the development of the robotics cluster in St. Petersburg, creating a precedent for further university-industry cooperation. It is expected that similar initiatives will accelerate the import substitution process for critical infrastructure, allowing Russian energy sector enterprises to maintain operational efficiency under sanctions. This represents an important step toward forming a fully autonomous industrial robotics ecosystem.
