
The OpenStack open standard, once seen as a universal counter to public cloud hegemony, is entering a phase of active phase-out by 2026. Originally, the project united the ambitions of tech giants like NASA and Red Hat to create a "homegrown AWS," but technical complexity and operational costs proved fatal. The primary reason for abandonment is the disproportionately high cost of infrastructure support: deploying and administering a cluster requires a staff of highly paid engineers, negating the economic benefits of avoiding public cloud rental.
Simultaneously, the market has shifted toward containerization and microservices architecture. Kubernetes became the de facto standard for orchestration, providing a lighter and more flexible approach to application management than the heavy OpenStack hypervisors. Companies realized that attempting to recreate public cloud functionality within their own walls is a dead end, requiring colossal R&D investment and continuous operations.
However, the technology won't disappear completely soon. OpenStack will retain positions in narrow niches where complete data control and infrastructure sovereignty are critical, such as in the government sector and among major telecom operators. Yet for business overall, the era of open cloud platforms has passed. Remaining in history as an important evolutionary stage, the technology has yielded to hybrid models where infrastructure management is automated through code rather than requiring manual intervention in complex virtual environments. This is a classic example of how ideological goals don't always justify economic and technical reality, and how the market chooses simple solutions over ambitious but cumbersome systems.
